Almost! Yeah, I almost gave up on my dream of going up north to Alaska. But then Richard came along. That's the guy I was hiking with. We got along really well from the first moment we met and started talking about our latest trips in and around North America.
He criss-crossed the U.S. in a camper van that he got from his former road buddy who traveled to Europe for several months and needed someone to take care of his car. That was supposed to be Richard's job. Not a bad deal for driving around with a car only paying for gas and insurance.
By the time he hit Vancouver he was not quite sure where to go. His only concrete goal was to reach the Canada's east coast in April/May. He was basically free to go wherever he might wanna travel to for the time in between.
So I brought up the idea of going to Alaska and it took him literally two seconds to make it his next destination. You cannot imagine my excitement about finally going to Alaska!
Right now we are preparing the trip as best as we can, trying to figure out what stuff and equipment we have to carry with us. Going to Alaska in Winter is not really a package holiday, although the snow and ice is "all inclusive"! :D
We expect temperatures of around -30°C. So we wanna be well-prepared.
To call the car a camper van is actually not really appropriate as it is a pickup truck with a small cabin-like box on top and a mattress inside.
To keep warm we have to fit ourselves out with high quality and high-tech outdoor clothing and really good sleeping bags.
We made a list of things we have to take with us and it is still getting longer and longer.
I will keep you updated about our preparations as the day of departure gets closer.
Of course, we went to the play of "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf?" and it was expectedly great. The actors were brilliant in creating the climax of chaos that began with a night party of two married couples and ends in catastrophe.
Oh yeah...the hockey game! Well, Vancouver played so-so and finally lost against Nashville. But it was a great experience to be at a live hockey game. Vancouver's "Rogers Arena" is a huge stadium with giant screens hanging from the ceiling in the middle. The game itself is only 60 minutes but we were there for almost three hours because there are three periods of playing (each 20 minutes), two breaks between the periods (15 minutes each) and a lot of smaller breaks in between for the TV commercials when the ice is cleaned. We used the time for looking at all the other people in the stadium eating tons of expensive snacks and junk food.
I also had my last Wushu lesson at SYL Institute. I was really upset to leave as I had a great time and hope to find a Wushu school in Germany that is as good and well organized as ShouYu Liang's institute. Before I left I asked for some pics with the Grandmaster, his daughter Helen and my two main instructors Derek and Tjong. I promissed to be back in one year...hopefully I can keep it.
Before I leave however, we decided to go out for party again! Carmen and me invited some friends over for a pre-drink before heading off to the Biltmore Cabaret. The night was short (the DJ changed the music radically from rock/indie to hiphop!), intense and filled with lots of beers and shots. Definitely a crazy last weekend in Vancouver.
Soon it will mean saying goodbye to Vancouver.
